I am shocked at how many American homesteaders have bulls. They treat them like pets! It is beyond stupid. It is the pet ones that make people complacent. Pet bulls can leave nothing but a bloody smear all over the paddock of their owners. Take note of this farmer. Saw a sail boat parked in a paddock that was turned into kindling by an angry bull. They are killers. We use first year old calf bulls, around eight months old. They never do a second year. So far so good.

Can you talk faster lol. Back in the early 60’s we lived in California n had a dairy farm, milking around 100 head of Holstein cows a day. We kept our Holstein bull in a special corral made of railroad ties n heavy lumber. There were a lot of days that the bull would try to break out of the corral n to keep this from happening, my dad n the other guys would have to take pitchforks n use them to keep the bull from climbing out or busting through the corral fences. Our neighbors bull got out of his pen and into the pen where he kept his horses. When the neighbor came home he found his horses ripped up by the bull, with the horses insides hanging out. He had to put down both of his horses. All bulls are dangerous, Never trust a bull especially dairy breeds.

Just something I noticed, I would think you might be standing the wrong side of the calving jack- if something happens and the cow falls and swings the jack to the right, your going to be caught by the that gates 😬

Why are people interfering when cow's can and do give birth on their own all the time? To see them being dragged out wih the full strength of a grown man is frightening.

Your incorrect there Pamela, we only have to help 10% of our cows, I only intervene when there’s a need to. The natural world doesn’t have a perfect end to everything every time. This cow would not of given birth on her own. If I had left her the result would of been straight forward, a loss of all 3 and a lot of needless suffering. It’s the very same with ourselves if you think about it. 👍

What happens when the calf is too big and gets stuck, or is in a bad position where either a hoof it stuck or everything is just generally jumbled around and can't be pushed out? Let both the calf and cow die, yeah what a wonderful idea.

What’s the purpose of breeding a Holstein to a Belgian Blue?

    1. Danails
      Danails
      9 күн мурун

@IFarm WeFarm I assumed Holsteins based on the colors and them being milkers. My apologies and thank you for correcting me. What breed are they? Also, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Do the Belgium Blue crossbreeds produce as much meat as the purebreds? Do they still inherit the double muscle genes? Does the crossbreeding change the temperament at all (as far as I know, based on YT videos, the BB’s seem to have a pretty docile temperament)?

    2. IFarm WeFarm
      IFarm WeFarm
      9 күн мурун

There not Holsteins, completely different style of cow. We breed continentals on our later cows as we like our milking stock that we keep to be born earlier so there at the correct age for breeding for January/ February calving. Also later born Friesian heifer calves don’t do as well as they have to compete for feed against the older ones. Breeding Belgium blues also provided a welcome source of income too as there a great seller as long as there the correct strain for that type of cow.

A true story, when I was younger I was walking along a country side, and I passed some cow but out of no where, A bull from hell came after me and I have never run so fast in my life! I was so scared, I thought I was going to die that day, however I never saw the fence so I thought it was going to get me and I saw that he stopped dead on his tracks... That’s when I realized that I was safe... I never again walked that road again...Sending y’all blessings from Pennsylvania USA 🇺🇸

You're an absolute treasure! Your farm is beautiful and so are your cows. I loved hearing about your bull story! So good to know. My father asked my sister to look after his cows when he only had a little time left in his life. He loved his cows and took good care of them as you do. She has been doing such a great job ever since & that was in 2005. I help on occasion. But we will certainly keep a healthy distance from the bull even though he has always had a good disposition. I have sent this vid to her as a reminder. Love your channel. Liz from Virginia.

This man is lucky to be alive. My family used to tell stories about how mean a milk production bull can be. These bulls will turn and try to kill you in a heart beat. When I was little I recall hearing the story of a man that escaped a Holstein bull one day but was killed the next day by the same bull. A relative of my mom's, had her husband killed by a bull. The lady took over farming on her own, several years later a bull also killed her. Another friend said there was a bull on their farm that hated her little girl and would stalk her, walking and hitting the fence trying to get her. Not a story. Never trust these animals

Where are good morals? Dairy farm is only based on slaved cows, all life pregnant and birthing to give milk and milk and you steal their babies, they cry for weeks. They can live 20 years but are put down after 5 or 6 years. The male babies are kept in little cages to refuse them to play and run, so their meat is tender when they are slaughter as babies and the industry names this veal. All the animal industry, sheep, hens, cows, turkeys, is based on the suffering of animals and a short life ended in murder. Shame on you!

Working a herd of Friesian bulls, we alway had a team of dogs, two of whom were trained to attack on command if the bulls turned on us. The dogs were so agile they seldom got hit and thrown. Like yourself sir, the really dangerous ones, those that would attack the tractor, or truck, or f-e-loader even, were off the farm and to the abattoir within the week. Stock truck drivers had all sorts of horror stories to tell about loading and unloading those crazy animals.

Try Listerene, or generic Great Value brand for ringworm. I've used it many time on my race horses when they'd get it at the track, to clear them up quickly. It involves cleaning everything that touches them, with it or with bleach for saddle clothes and brushes. I used the listerene to wash down the leather bridles and saddle girths to. Tough to be consistant, but that is what works. It works on small animals too, and me. Tea tree oil also helps. Bleach on everything that is safe to use it on, like your pipes. Enjoyed your video!

Irish Sharon, here in Ireland cattle are in for 4-5 months at times. Last year it was nearly 6 months. Parts of Ireland have drier free draining land and they can keep cattle out for longer but not here. We spend a fortune on drainage work every year just trying to keep grass growing and allow us to work the land. I do see a lot of USA farm ms that have there cattle in all year round too. In fact there’s a famous dairy farm in South Dakota called Drumgoon Dairy that would have them house all year around. The family that bought that farm originally came from beside us here.

@alistair clement Must be a new practice because I lived by a dairy farm and they were out all year. Although, I'm in Oregon. Lived next to a dairy farm in California when little and they were outside also. 73 now.

More often than not, dairy cattle in the USA never go outside.

my grandfather used to walk the bull from farm to farm in the Vorest o Dean. One occasion it decided to charge him. He smashed it between the eyes with a rock. The bull never tried it again

First time viewer from Canada. I come from a family of farmers on my grandma's side and Mennonites on my grandpa's side. I understand there's different breeds of cows I personally have liked the black n white ones like the ones you have and the jersey for milk. Angus is good for the meat but I think if it's bread good raised good than the meat should hopefully be good to. Even my grandma had a hard time with what kinds of breeds of cows there are but she know enough to get by

@IFarm WeFarm so are the Belgium Blue bulls double muscled and freakishly large across the board? Do you often have to pull calves from adult calves? And can you explain in short the genetic background of your cows? No sarcasm intended

No not at all, that’s a hugely misinformed topic, my bull calves sell for a premium and we have buyers with pre orders placed a year in advance. It’s one of our biggest incomes during the spring time.

The problem is that many people think that an animal thinks and feels like a human. But that's wrong and in the worst case scenario it can lead to being careless.

New subscriber watching this video and what I see I love your content. I'm An old city girl just buying meat at the supermarket but have for years watched farming vlogs across the globe and realise what goes into farming through the seasons and years. It is not easy, what you cattle/sheep/grain etc: go through to produce the end product is incredible.! I myself totally agree with your bull misfortune when you were young. Every Bull even when mild has the capacity to become aggressive at any stage on the farm. Their primary job has always been to defend their gals and breed their gals. Keeping bulls seperate until mating time works a little but mother nature has other ideas. God bless.
