As much as i know im an ass for essentially trying to fix stupid. The answer isnt fixing everything around drivers its fixing the drivers themselves. In america the standard to get a license is so painfully low and because of that drivers who have just recieved their full license are woefully unprepared for all the hard parts of driving

GRAPHIC DETAILS AHEAD. Paramedic here. Regarding how guardrails used to impale people. I have seen this first hand. My first fatal car accident was a driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel in a sedan and crashed directly into one of those scooped guardrails. The guardrail punched through the engine, the firewall, and entered the passenger compartment. The steering wheel was torn off and the driver was partially decapitated by the guardrail. The guardrail basically threaded the sedan along about 20 yards of guardrail exiting the back window and elevating the back wheels of the vehicle off the ground. The destructive force of the impact sent the body of the driver, his seat, and a large quantity of engine debris into the back seat where it pinned and killed his 3 year old daughter. We weren't initially aware that the toddler was in the wreck as she was buried in the rubble in the back seat. We were blocked in the fire department and had to wait for the detectives to arrive. I shined my flashlight into the wreck and just happened to see a car seat. I looked closer and saw a childs broken leg and femur sticking out. I grabbed a Fire Lieutenant and we went around to the other side of the vehicle where she was. I opened the door. I don't know why, maybe I had seen it. But I didn't fully depress my right foot for some reason. I looked under it and saw that a piece of the mans brain had fallen out. We checked the girls vitals and analyzed her injuries and found that she had likely died instantly in her sleep. I will never forget seeing the chunks of brain and blood and hair caked on the guardrail as I walked up to the wreck. My service held a "critical stress debriefing". I was the paramedic who wrote up the two death reports and they somehow neglected to invite me. Which, it turned out, was for the best as the Fire Department had found the brain and given it to the other ambulance crew to "dispose of". One problem though. The Medical Examiner called the FD and ambulance services in the morning to politely inquire as to the whereabouts of this mans left temporal lobe. The "critical stress debriefing" turned into a shouting match between the FD and ambulance crew as to who should have known better as to leave his brain on scene. I'm glad I didn't go. Edit: the saddest detail is this. If the father had placed the daughters carseat in the other side of the back seat, she would have survived with minimal injuries. Life is strange sometimes.

One great barrier to consider is the "Steel and Foam Energy Reduction Barrier" (a.k.a. SAFER barrier). They started using it in the mid 2000s in motorsports. "The SAFER barrier consists of structural steel tubes welded together in a flush mounting, strapped in place to the existing concrete retaining wall. Behind these tubes are bundles of closed-cell polystyrene foam, placed between the barrier and wall. The theory behind the design is that the barrier absorbs a portion of the kinetic energy released when a race car makes contact with the wall. This energy is dissipated along a longer portion of the wall. The impact energy to the car and driver are reduced, and the car is likewise not propelled back into traffic on the racing surface". (Wikipedia)

11:55 I've always wanted to see how one of these are supposed to function. When I was a kid, I first saw a truck that said "WIDE LOAD" on the back and it had that weird thing on it. Then one day I saw one with the weird thing in the downward position, which answered some questions but created more. I've heard it was to protect workers but I figured that was just BS because it seemed like a whole lot of extra cost just to save a few lives. I thought they'd just tell workers to dodge or something.
