If you watched the Super Bowl you may have noticed GM's commercial about their new upcoming electric vehicles in 2021. This seems to confirm that 2021 is truly the year of the Electric Vehicle. It’s safe to say Tesla is currently the leader in the EV space. I’ve owned a Tesla Model 3 for almost 3 years and it’s been one of the best purchases of my life. But even though Teslas are superior in many ways they aren’t the only option when it comes to choosing a good electric vehicle. And the more electric cars that come out, the more competition there is, the better it is for us, the consumers. This list is sorted by price, from the most affordable to the most expensive.

0:00 Intro
0:47 Chevy Bolt & Bolt EUV
2:34 Nissan Ariya
4:12 VW ID4
5:57 Ford Mustang Mach-E
7:32 Hyundai Ioniq 5
8:55 Curology (Sponsor)
10:07 Kia CV/EV5
11:46 Tesla Cybertruck
13:18 Rivian R1T & R1S
14:51 Tesla Model S Plaid+
16:29 Lucid Air

I was never a big fan of the looks & performance of the Bolt, but the new Bolt has been redesigned and also comes in a new variant called the Bolt EUV which stands for electric utility vehicle and is considered to be a crossover SUV and has more space than the regular Bolt as well as a slightly different exterior style.

VW says the ID4 will be able to travel up to 250 miles on a full charge and comes in a few different options: the Pro, 1st Edition, and Pro S. At first, all ID4 models will offer only rear-wheel drive but the all-wheel drive models will join the lineup later this year as well as a less-expensive base model coming in 2022.

It comes in two battery sizes and either rear or all-wheel drive, and can provide anywhere from 211 miles up to 305 miles of range on a full charge depending on the configuration which in my opinion is way too many to choose from.

The Tesla Cybertruck starts around $40,000 for the single motor RWD variant but that’s not going into production until late 2022 so that’s why it’s here at this spot because the dual motor and tri motor versions will be produced first in late 2021 and starting around $50,000 and $70,000 respectively. It can travel anywhere from 250 miles to over 500 miles on a full charge depending on the configuration, and the performance is insane with a 0-60 speed of less than 3 seconds on the tri motor AWD version.

Rivian was founded in 2009, and since then they’ve gotten a lot of attention for their upcoming pickup truck, the R1T, and their SUV, the R1S. They’re backed by Amazon and Ford, and they have a very specific target audience in mind and pretty spot on branding, with a focus on high-end luxury yet adventurous utility. It promises at least 300 miles of range on the large battery pack and over 400 miles on the max battery pack with crazy performance using a quad motor all wheel drive setup delivering a 0-60 speed of 3 seconds and up to 11,000 pounds of towing capacity. But it also comes in a quad motor setup with the same 0-60 speed of 3 seconds as the R1T. I was lucky enough to see both of these vehicles in person last year at Fully Charged Live North America, and they look just as good in person as they do in photos.

So, Andy, my take on the "e" cars. They will never fly. Sure they have the gimmick of electric. But, most of these cars are way out of most American budgets. 30-45,000 dollars for a car? If you make more than 100,000 dollars a year you are never going to touch one of these. Most people buy cars in the 20-30000 dollar range. Maintenance will be another headache for most as well. You'll probably have to take it in to the dealers shop and let them fix or maintain anything that is squeaking. That's another selling point that rarely talked about. So, by the time they get these cars down to a really affordable range, I will probably be dead and gone and it won't be my problem to think about. Sorry for the sour grapes, but this country was founded on the "affordable" car. I'll stick with my affordable gas car thank you very much.

The BEST Electric Vehicle is the Electric Train, because it needs NO LiIon- Batteries and takes energy from an energy- system parallel to the rails (With Batteries Half of the Train would be filled with Batteries, that would be ecological NONSENSE) Many people ride in a train and NO Driver is needed. That's the FUTURE 😁 Also individual Traffic is possible, when E- Cars would drive like a train in narrow formation by distance- control and have the same energy- system parallel to the roads and only a very small 'BackUp' Battery for jumping from one road- energy- system to another or reaching the garage at destination 😍

My concern with all the new EV's is the charging stations, will all the new cars be compatible with the current charging stations (Tesla supercharging, ChargePoint, Blink), or will each new car company have their own stations?

Idk what to do, electric vehicles are clearly the present and future yet they do nothing absolutely nothing for my soul. As a man the cars that really make me feel good are the ones closest to the ones my father and grandfather drove. The loud engine noises, the manual transmission, the physical speedometer, physical control gear adjustments, the lack of lcd screens which were constantly surrounded by today. Maybe I just can't get over the past, but my masculinity craves the more traditional cars.

It did wet the appetite to think we are almost there, or it is here already! But perhaps it is still, are we there yet? With it all being US prices, I am looking forward to them coming down to down under prices. I am waiting for an electric car to be under AU$29K. A friend of mine wanted to convert by buying piece by piece over the years till he had all the parts to do it. I told him by then they will be the full package deals for about $25K! Though one seldom pays cash for a new car do they? So a good credit rating is more like the requirement. Looking forward to electric bikes too. But these cars are got me considering the warmer option. Heaters! The things we take for granted. An electric car heater is going to hurt the distance a lot? Perhaps some heat storage mechanism might help in the design inventions?

When you live more than 24 miles away from your nearest town (as I do), in a very rural part of the UK dominated by hill farming, then today, having an electric vehicle is completely impractical. I understand the need for EV's in the major towns and cities but not in the rural parts of the UK, until the following issues have been fully addressed; 1) the battery range needs to be a minimum of c. 500 genuine miles, under both winter and summer driving conditions... not based on laboratory or theoretical modelling) 2) the batteries need to be fully rechargeable in less than 10 minutes to be practical in a working vehicle for say farmers. 3) the electricity supply infrastructure across the rural communities needs to be beefed up considerably, to make sufficient power available to allow EV's to be recharged without overloading the network. 4) the price of EV's need to be reduced substantially to make them as competitive as diesels and petrol cars. 5) Rural garages will need to convert to EV maintenance capability to look after the EV cars. Otherwise you may have to drive 60+miles to get an annual service. 6) Winter driving conditions in many rural areas of the UK can be very challenging at times, especially in the snow and ice conditions, so there need to be more 4x4 EV's available, fully capable of operating in such conditions and across rough terrain ( with sufficient power and torque to tow trailers etc) Until these issues are addressed, then I won't be buying an EV anytime soon.

The Nissan Ariya, which you called "a giant Duracell battery on wheels"....hilarious! Anyhow as a fellow owner of a Tesla (2018) Model 3, I simply say this: I will ONLY BUY an EV if: 1. It has a 350+ (preferably 400) mile range. 2. It has a heat pump for heating and cooling the interior. 3. A battery that is solid state, or uses technology that charges much faster than the current Tesla charge rate. The RANGE ANXIETY with Tesla going long distance is REAL. It will be even worse with non-Tesla. Whereas the Tesla Superchargers dish out 150-250 kW charge rate, with ChargePoint or EVGo, even their DC chargers, the rate is 50-60 kW. So plan on having a nice 2-3 hour NAP while your car is charging at one of those! If you don't believe me, go to and see how many chargers there are for a 300 mile range around you. You'll be pretty pissed!

My russian is very good to deal with russian, ukrainian customers. About 30% of my customers are from Ukraine. Ah, tax credits. Here is the thing about tax credits, in it's wisdom the federal government rationalized that they could get away with paying disabled veterans a lot less if they just treated a VA disability as if it were in effect an out of court settlement, that is a replacement for a loss and thus not income. Which is fine in some ways, we do not have to file with the IRS. The downside of that is though that I also cannot claim any of the juicy tax credits that make the solar revolution, be it rooftop panels for power, or huge subsidies for electric cars, among others. So, after the tax credit your cost of a new car or rooftop solar has a breakeven cost that makes sense, for me it just does not, yet soon enough we are all going to be forced to buy these things because the old fossil alternatives will no longer be economical as they are taxed out of existence. If I can't buy the old models and can't afford the new technology because I don't qualify for the subsidies, then I and millions like me will be left without.

What’s the big deal about 0-60 mph performance? Drag racing isn’t a thing as far as I can tell. I don’t know when that would be important to me in the real world.

My neighbor bought an electric car. She had it only 3 months and it burned down her house. Her homeowners insurance would not cover it because she didn't notify them of the power port that was installed in the garage. The power port over heated the wire that went to the breaker box.

While that might be a problem, I believe with the increasing adoption of EV's charging stations will be more commonly available and you will be able to charge, at work, school, store etc.
